Storing Christmas Decorations: Storage Unit Tips

Traditionally, January 6th is the day to take all those decorations down, but how many of us have been guilty of leaving bits and pieces about for weeks longer? It can seem like a mammoth chore getting everything tidied and sorted for next year.

Don’t despair, and certainly don’t start shoving everything into one big cardboard box, we’ve put together some of the best tips and tricks to help you get everything sorted quickly and easily this Christmas using storage units.

Even better, packing everything away right is going to make next year’s decorating even more straightforward, from easy-to-find labelled boxes to knowing that not one light or bauble is broken. From storage services to sandwich bags, our key tips and tricks will help your Christmas storage go off without a hitch.

Label everything!

Making sure all of the different boxes and containers are clearly and coherently labelled will make finding what you’re looking for infinitely easier. How many times have you been digging through piles of random stuff in the spare room or loft, wishing you had marked the correct box?

If you wanted to go a step further, make your labels even more descriptive. Don’t just put ‘baubles’ put ’12 Glass Baubles, Reds and Greens’. Or even more, a complete descriptive list on the outside of each box. Going this extra mile might seem a little much right now, but think forward to next year when you’re stressing about getting the decorations up. This could make things much more straightforward.

Reference photos

While it might seem a little fussy, if you have spent a long time perfecting your Christmas displays, trees and decorations, taking photos could help make the whole set-up much quicker next year.

If you’re someone who spends ages getting things just right, making sure all your decorations are spot on and perfectly placed, you might want to consider taking a couple of photos. Not just to help you remember how great things looked but also to help you achieve the same look next year and maybe even improve on it!

Storage containers

Make sure to get some good solid boxes. There is no use in the flimsy, falling-apart packaging the baubles came in five years ago – get some quality, durable, double-walled cardboard boxes. This not only allows you to trust that your decorations are protected but enables you to neatly stack and sort the boxes once everything is all packed away.

Replacing baubles and other expensive decorations is much more costly than ordering some quality storage containers, which, combined with the right storage services, could make everything go smoothly.

Pack everything consistently

When it comes to fragile decorations, it may sound counterintuitive, but packing everything tightly with plenty of newspaper or bubble wrap will prevent things from shifting and allow you to trust that nothing will get damaged during transport and storage. Combining this with solid, sturdy boxes, you know that your sentimental, fragile decorations are safe.

If you’re running short of newspaper or bubble wrap, you can always use some of the ripped-up wrapping paper from the big day. This is a great way to avoid unnecessary waste.

Sealable bags

Storing lights and other easily tangled decorations can be a little tricky. You’ll struggle to get these bits back in the boxes they came in, so it’s worth finding some sealable bags to separate all the different sets into. That way, you won’t get one giant mess of wires to unpick next year.

Another massive benefit of using sealable bags is knowing that if any moisture does get in, the items stored in sealable bags will always be completely dry and safe.

Utilise professional storage services

Lastly, it’s worth discussing where you’re going to be storing away all these boxes and containers of decorations. The fact is, not all of us have a clear and accessible place to store things, especially not places that are warm, dry and secure.

Too often, important things are stuffed away in the garage or loft, or take up space in the spare room, risking getting damaged or lost. Self storage services can prove a really useful option when it comes to making sure all your items are safe and sound, and ready for next year.
